A sundog on the horizon ahead is not a good thing at sea
A fair day but the seas were building on the 4 day
passage from Bora Bora to Niue
NEXT->
The waves built to 6-8 ft...
...then they grew some more...
...becoming alarmingly high...
...and confused...
...becoming 8-10 ft breaking following seas...
...with mountainous peaks...
...and more washing machine action...
...reaching peak heights of 10 ft running up our stern for
a whole 24 hours...
...and then we sailed out of it...
...and by the next dawn...
...flat calm and a peaceful ride!
Had at least one full day of calm sailing into this sunset
After 4 days we sighted Niue, situated all alone in the
South Pacific Ocean
At the wharf you raise & lower your dinghy from the
crashing swell by crane with an electric winch
A calm day in the Alofi, Niue anchorage with a NE wind
Outside the anchorage the Niue coastline is rugged
Limestone caves and siinkholes perforate the shoreline
cliffs
Low tide exposes a shore of flat limestone, not sand
The caves are cool on a hot sunny day
This is not a UFO, but the centerpiece sculpture in a
Sculpture Park on Niue
The attendant sculptures surround the centerpiece
Closeup of a Niuean sculpture
A hike on a cliffwalk is tough going through mangrove
roots and over razor sharp limestone
The trail winds amid stalactites and stalagmites
Sometimes a path takes a route right through a
limestone cave
The cliffs of Niue's coast are 300 ft high
Hole in the Rock
The Niueans take island conservation most seriously
and their pristine coastal waters prove it.
A limestone flow formation
Lava heron
Receeding tide exposes flat rock shelf
A greeting is spelled out with paper cups in a chain link
fence, high tech for Niue
The coastal tidal pools are awesome
